Ugh, stop twitching
the napoleon dynamite soundtrack
music Posted 2005-01-25 08:51:39 by Jim Crawford
When I heard Sparklemotion's “Time After Time” on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack album, I was both horrified and curious. Horrified, because the verses use nothing but parallel motion between instruments -- in octaves, no less -- for the verses. String, synth, bass, vocal, always playing the exact same note. It's fucking hideous. Curious, because I wanted to know how I missed this before, having heard it in both “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.” Actually, I guess I was a little horrified that I hadn't noticed it, too.

In order to figure it out, I cued up the relevant scene in Napoleon Dynamite, and the orchestration was entirely different and much more palatable. After some googling, I found out that “Time After Time” is actually a Cyndi Lauper song! Sparklemotion just did a hideous cover of it, and some hateful prankster put that version on the soundtrack album, even though the movie used Cyndi Lauper's original version.

It was probably the same music-hater who decided not to include The Penguin Cafe Orchestra's “Music For a Found Harmonium,” used in the ending montage, even though there's a track on the album called “Alternate Ending Montage.”

i liked that song, as it was in "romy and michelle's high school reunion" i haven't listened to it in quite a while, however.

So you haven't seen Napoleon Dynamite, then? Time for a double header, I say.
Missing Song: We're Going to be Friends

I was disappointed to see that "We're Going to be Friends" isn't on the soundtrack CD. I've seen the film a couple of times, and that song has really grown on me.

Wow, I completely forgot about that song, and I liked it a lot too.

They also failed to include a song I didn't recognize that sampled Zapp & Roger's "So Ruff, So Tuff." Because Mexicans were listening to it, is my guess.

Seriously, though, I wonder if these songs are missing for licensing reasons. Perhaps it's cheaper to put a White Stripes song in a movie than on a CD?

Does anyone know the song that plays during the ending montage that shows napoleon walking, kip going back with lafawnduh, and pedro celebrating with his family?

Does anyone know the first song that plays in the movie? I think there is a guitar strumming during it and I believe someone is singing. I am just not sure of the name.

Jacob, remember that forum posts often help other people too. If you find the answer yourself, don't just say "never mind," tell people what the answer is. The song that plays over the opening credits is "We're Going to be Friends" by the White Stripes.

blah, the dance song is "Canned Heat," by Jamiroquai.
The Song Kip Sings

Does anyone have or know the name of the song Kip sings during the post credits wedding scene?

I didn't see it in the end credits, possibly because it comes afterwards. It may not have a name. But it's a hidden track on the soundtrack album: there's a minute of silence after "The Promise," and then a pretty neat low-pass filter plus pitch shift up effect introduces Kip's song. Don't worry, they don't filter the song itself, just the applause leading into it :)
Thanks

i liked the song: The Promise. It is perfect for the ending of the movie. Something about the lyrics and music that made it perfect.....

anyone know any tabs for the song?
re: ending, before and during credits....

Yeah, one of the great things about Napoleon Dynamite is that it had not one but two feel-good endings. And the music had a lot to do with both of them.

That's a kickass website for guitar tabs. It has a shitload of ads but it's worth it.

What is the song that plays in Pedros cousins car? You know like the continuous beat.

There are two. One is Zapp & Roger's "So Ruff, So Tuff." The other I don't recognize; I read somewhere that it was Zapp & Roger's "More Bounce to the Ounce," but it doesn't sound like that to me. I suspect it's a John Swihart original.

(I said before that I thought the first song merely sampled "So Ruff, So Tuff," but have since been convinced that it's the actual song.)

Someone help please! I know I've heard "Music for a Found Harmonium" in another movie. Was it "She's having a Baby"? It's driving me nuts!!! It isn't on imdb as a soundtrack listing for anything other than NP.

I haven't seen it, but possibly Punch Drunk Love. I hear Adam Sandler finds a harmonium in that movie, anyways.

Music For A Found Harmonium, by Penguin Cafe Orchestra, on the album Broadcasting From Home, is indeed in another movie other than Napolean Dynamite. The movie is a small australian movie about a man who steals a trolley. The song is used during a scene where he drives the trolley through the city at night. The movie is called "Malcom."

re: help

The Happy Hands Club song is "The Rose," by Amanda McBroom.

For future reference, when you're trying to find out the name of a song it often helps to google for the lyrics.

seems like it might be a good idea to just list where in the movie every song on the soundtrack plays, pf ;)

Vicky, Bette Midler sang The Rose (for her lead role in a movie about Janis Joplin, which was also called The Rose), but Amanda McBroom wrote it.

The following was emailed to me by hwilkins[rest of email removed]:

"This track and others by Penguin Cafe Orchestra was the original soundtrack for a superb 1986 Australian film entitled 'Malcolm'. The film won lots of awards, is extremely funny and very inventive. Catch it as soon as possible."

Actually that version is performed by the Celtic Fiddle Festival (its the name of the group not an actual festival)

Yes. Yes, someone does.
PCO in ND
Posted by Anonymous on 2006-06-22 18:07:11
for completists: the original version of "Music For a Found Harmonium" was written and performed by Penguin Cafe Orchestra, but the version you hear in Napoleon Dynamite is performed by Patrick Street (not Celtic Fiddle Festival as mentioned above). You can find this version on the PCO album "Preludes, Airs & Yodels", track 11.

dude, anonymous, you are a God for finding the soundtrack version of the Harmonium song.

You know what else is awesome? THIS THREAD of this very blog that I never heard of before until I stumbled upon from Google. The info on here is freakin' sweet.

Final thing that is awesome -- that this page was the first response of my (misspelled) query: "napolean dynomite music not in soundtrack"!

John Swihart's score
Posted by Anonymous (The Incredible Suit) on 2010-11-08 05:25:10
Does anyone know what instrument Swihart uses for the majority of his score? I'm guessing it's just some kind of synth but I wondered if it was something specific. Cheers!
re: John Swihart's score
Posted by Jim Crawford on 2010-11-08 13:36:19
It could just be a modern sample-based synthesizer, but I'm hearing more traditional keyboards in there, mostly electric piano and organ.
