I'm listening to the Beach Boys's “Pet Sounds” right now. It's pretty good. Noticable double-tracking errors everywhere, though, just like every other recording of the era.
Here's my idea. Double-tracking errors show up most noticably on plosive and sibilant sounds. So why don't producers just ask the singers to not “sing” the plosive and sibilant sounds during the double-tracking? I mean, they're essentially white noise. You add white noise to white noise, and you get white noise, not a chorus effect.
